What you will learn:

Introduction

. An introduction to how sound works alone, and how it functions within computer environments. Participants will learn the fundamentals of how we can edit audio and layer sounds together.

Module 1: Introduction to audio

. Participants will learn how microphones work, which is fundamental to capturing the world around them, like how a camera is a lens for the work, a microphone can be the ears. Whilst picking the correct microphone is part of the work, the other being microphone technique, which is where the skill comes into play.

Module 2: Recording technique

. Through a series of short video exemplars, participants will be shown how to sound design effectively through reduced listening principles, putting focus on the intrinsic qualities of sound and the effects that it has on the image, allowing for enhanced impact.

Module 3: Sound design for picture

. Effects processing is the key to creating coherent sound mixes, where participants will learn how to use the various tools to create professional-grade sound and understanding deeper sound design techniques.

Meet your instructor:

Daniel Morrison ​Neil

Creative Lead for Future Skills

Daniel Morrison Neil is a composer and sound designer working as a lecturer in the Future Skills programmes, specialising in all forms of innovative audio production methods ranging from audio for games, ambisonics, Dolby Atmos, dubbing workflow, and the sonic arts. With a background in fine art practice, Daniel offers a unique perspective that blends the creative and technical aspects of audio production, focussing on industry-leading approaches to encourage exploration within these fields. Daniel is also part of the School of Innovation and Technology, as well as being the Lead of Audio, Composition, and Voice Acting in the Fallout: London project by Team FOLON. 

. In order to create coherent mixes for your project, participants will learn how to break down the components of the soundtrack into blocks of audio, which is fundamental for industry practice and understanding how we treat each of these groups, whether that be for music, or audio for picture formats.

Do I need previous experience with audio production?

. Participants should have access to a computer and headphones. We will provide access to the software needed for the course.

What equipment do I need? Will any be provided?

. All the courses available on Glasgow School of Art's Future Skills are eligible for a certificate of completion. Participants will also be able to walk away with a badge to add to their social channels to show they completed a course.
