Traditional and creative mending skills

This course will provide an introduction to traditional and creative mending skills. By participating you’ll be part of a global creative action resisting the cycle of excess through repair and reuse.  Together, we will explore our personal and collective memories of textile use and wear, learning practical mending skills to increase the longevity of our wardrobes. It is suitable for anyone interested in re-thinking our approach to our material world and aims to pursue a more circular way of thinking about textiles. 

Course outcomes:

  • Learn to work with running stitch, duplicate stitch and darning

  • Engage with damaged personal garments and begin to repair them through hand stitch

  • ​work together to form connections within the group

Erin McQuarrie​

Creative Lead for Future Skills 

Erin’s practice is driven by materiality and supported by research in historical and contemporary making processes, with an emphasis on how they relate to people and place. She believes tactile sensibility is essential to understanding the world around us and explores this through the use of vernacular materials and traditional craft processes. She graduated from The Glasgow School of Art with a BFA in Textiles in 2018 and was awarded her MFA from Parsons School of Design in 2021. Erin’s courses hold hope, joy, heart, and creative connection at their core, encouraging students to be curious, imaginative, and playful through hands on making.

. no prior experience of textile hand skills is required.

Do I need previous experience with mending practices?

. We will be working with beautiful materials kindly provided by luxury textile company Alex Begg . All other essential tools will be supplied. Feel free to bring in a personal item you would like to mend.

Will supplies be provided?

. All the courses available on Glasgow School of Art's Future Skills are eligible for a certificate of completion. Participants will also be able to walk away with a badge to add to their social channels to show they completed a course.
