Description:

This short course offers an entry-level introduction to engaging with audio production for various AV formats. You will learn multiple approaches for audio output and confidently conceptualise audio ideas with foundational knowledge of software and tools such as using Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), handling microphones and audio interfaces, and synthesis techniques for sound design. This short course is ideal for those who require knowledge of current software and apply it to their everyday practice.

A distinct advantage of this course is that no prior audio knowledge is necessary, which ensures that all are welcome from varied professional media or artistic backgrounds. By immersing themselves in the essentials of audio production, learners will stand to gain pivotal technical proficiency, setting them on a path to explore the broader fields of applied sonic arts.

This course aims to:

  • Familiarise students with audio production tools, hardware, and processes.
  • Acquire foundational knowledge to record, edit, mix, and design audio with digital audio production software.
  • Prepare students with the ability to use Reaper for various tasks, such as recording for podcasts, music production, and audio post-production for video.

The course is split into five weeks, with in-person lectures and workshops and various recorded video content per week available in the virtual learning environment.

Week 1 - Introduction to audio, Reaper, and DAW's

Week 2 - Audio recording, dialogue, and sound design

Week 3 - Midi and virtual instruments

Week 4 - Sound design for picture
